Goodness knows there are lots of tangents with which I could start this post about depictions of the sun in Berkeley yards.
Let me just mention one, the myth of Icarus. We all know that Icarus ignored the counsel of his father and flew too high, too close to the sun. We tend to forget that the counsel was not simply to not fly too high, but also not to fly too low. I myself favor that second piece of advice – don’t fly too low.
Now, though, for some of the many suns seen on our houses and in our yards:
Just as I was about to walk these photos in to my friend, he stepped into my office/library with something to show me. Gabby had just sent him a modest collection of postcards of Bob Hope’s Palm Springs house. I agreed to check out the postcards and he agreed to check out the sun photos.
I love John Lautner’s work and told my friend that I really liked these postcards. As for the sun photos, he too approved:
