My friend sent Gabby a draft of my posting on jungle animals on the streets of Berkeley, and asked what my friend might have in the music department to enhance the posting. We were surprised to hear that he had very little. This is what he had:
Two great records, but not much. But – we are not done. Gabby loves a challenge. He was in Philadelphia. He and Young Emily were with Tavia, her mother, after the trip to Brittany and Gabby’s side-trip to Romania. He quickly created a challenge for himself.
The goal of the challenge: to find as many record albums with “jungle” in the title as possible.
The rules of the challenge:
1) Three days to search and acquire. One day in Philadelphia. One day in Wilmington. One day in Baltimore.
2) No record stores. Junk shops and thrift shops and yard sales and flea markets only.
3) No Jungle Book albums. Too obvious.
4) No record will be bought for more than $2.
Okay. Fair enough. Here is what he came up with:
Well, that’s impressive. I count 45 albums. But – he wasn’t done. He had a whole subsection on “jungle fever.”
Another 19! In three days he found 64 jungle albums. He spent a total of just under $97. He took the newly assembled collection into a used record store in South Philadelphia. He knew the guy who runs the store. By then, he had found another 7.
Gabby sold the 71 albums for $700. Once you figure gas and mileage and time, he made a few bucks an hour. But there it was, collection come, collection gone.
I asked my friend what he thought of Gabby’s challenge and the 71 albums he found.
